Even Gary Medel was surprised by Messi’s red card
The Chile player didn’t even expect a booking
Chile’s Gary Medel has agreed with Lionel Messi and said that he did not think the pair deserved their red cards in Saturday’s Copa America third-place play-off.
The pair were sent off after 37 minutes of the game, which Argentina went on to win 2-1, after a clash where Medel seemed to be the aggressor.
Messi made his feelings about his sending off pretty clear after the match, while Medel reckons the scuffle between the pair did not even warrant a booking.
“I agree with Messi, didn’t even think we’d get a yellow for it,” he said.
“There were a few shoves but that was it. The referee could’ve handled that a lot better.”

Meanwhile, Conmebol have since responded to Messi’s criticisms and have described his comments as “unacceptable” and “unfounded.”
