Johan Cruyff’s prophecy about Lionel Messi and the Ballon d’Or
Messi will have more Ballon d’Ors than anyone else, Cruyff once predicted
In 2012, Lionel Messi had won his second Ballon d’Or, and Barcelona legend Johan Cruyff had a prediction. Speaking to Diario Olé, the Dutchman prophesied: “He will be the one with the most Ballon d’Ors ever in history,” he said then.
Even in 2012, Cruyff had said that Messi had “a seat at the table” along side himself, Alfredo Di Stéfano, Diego Maradona, and Pelé as the all-time greats.
“Probably, he will win five, six, or seven Ballon d’Ors, he’s incomparable, he plays in another league.”
Messi already has five Ballon d’Ors. Rumors suggest he may be picking up his sixth on Monday, which would be a new world record. Will he win it? And how about a seventh?
We will see. But it seems that Cruyff was onto something in 2012.
