Setien explains how Cruyff has influenced his tactics
The Barcelona boss has been talking about the Dutch legend
Barcelona manager Quique Setien has been talking about his admiration for Johan Cruyff and how the legendary Dutchman influenced his tactics.
The 61-year-old says watching Cruyff’s team was a real eye-opener and made him think about his approach to the game in a different way.
“Until I got to see Cruyff’s Barca, I didn’t think much about tactics and what was being done. I went out on the field to play. When you see Cruyff and this Barcelona team and you’re on the field and see them start to play and touch the ball that’s when you really say, ‘Wow, what have I been doing all this time? This is what I like. Because this is controlling the ball.’
“And when I started to see how football is played here and you stepped on to the field and were just running after the ball and you spent 80 minutes chasing the ball, without having it that’s when you start seeing the tactical side of things and you say, ‘Why is this happening?’ So you begin analyzing things, you see things, and you see why they happen. And that’s when you truly realise what you like and you start to get an idea in your head. That’s the idea I’ve followed.”
