The two spoke about the possibility last year

Luis Suarez was ready to consider leaving Barcelona and returning to Nacional at the end of last year, according to Uruguay international Sebastian Abreu.

The 43-year-old player-coach of Boston River says he had a chance of becoming Nacional boss, after Alvaro Gutierrez left in December, and spoke to Suarez about a move.

“I had full, real chances [of being Nacional coach],” he said.

”And when in those days, after December 18, Luis was about to come, I said to him: ‘Look, Lucho, it is not anything concrete, but there may be a possibility … What’s your situation? What do we do?’

”[Abreu claims Suarez replied:] ‘If you get to be [coach], let me talk to Sofi, talk about the family. I always told you that if you were a coach I could come back.’

“Going back to Nacional was something that motivated Luis, it was a nice challenge.”

Yet Nacional went on to appoint former goalkeeper Gustavo Munua as their coach rather than Abreu.

Suarez is contracted to Barcelona until summer 2021 but said in February his deal includes an automatic renewal clause if he plays more than 60% of the club’s games next season.
