Messi: Impossible to win UCL playing as we were
The captain says the break may do his team good
Lionel Messi has given an interview to the Spanish press where he’s been talking about Barcelona’s Champions League hopes.
The captain said earlier in the season that he felt Barca ‘are not at a level today to fight for the Champions League’ which brought disagreement from manager Quique Setien.
The Barca boss said he thought his team had a “good chance” of lifting the European Cup, and Messi has now sought to offer some more insight into his thinking.
“What I said was playing as we did in those final few games before football was suspended, of course we wouldn’t win the Champions League,” Messi said.
“I never doubted the squad we have and I don’t doubt we can win everything that’s left, just not playing as we were playing.
“Everyone has their own opinion and all opinions are respected. Mine is based on being lucky enough to play in the Champions League for many years and I know it’s not possible to win it playing as we were playing,”

Barcelona are currently midway through their last-16 tie with Napoli with the score tied at 1-1 after the first leg at the Stadio San Paolo. UEFA are reportedly hoping to resume the competition in July or August.
