The Catalans see García as the future

Barcelona continue to make a push to sign Manchester City’s Eric García, either this year or next, according to a new report. The reasons for Barcelona’s attempts to sign the young defender are easy to understand: he is a player they think will fit into the team like a glove and who will represent the the blaugrana for a time to come.

García could follow in the footsteps of another defender who left Barcelona’s youth teams to go to Manchester, only to return shortly after: Gerard Piqué.

And it is precisely Piqué whom Barcelona hopes he will eventually replace, as the veteran defender reaches the twilight of his career.

Not only do they think he is a “Barcelona style” player, who already knows the city and club well, but Barcelona’s front office values the fact that García was taught by none other than Pep Guardiola.

Now, it’s all about convincing him to join. With his contract running down next year, the Catalans are optimistic they can get him either this summer, relatively cheaply, or next year, for free.

Villarreal defender Pau Torres has been mentioned as a possible alternative.
