If the motion succeeds, there will be a vote whether to formally dismiss him as Barcelona president

A motion to censure Barcelona club president Josep Maria Bartomeu and expose him to a potential recall vote is gaining steam, but the deadline is fast approaching for them to hit the number of signatures needed to advance the effort.

Més que una Moció, the group collecting the signatures, reports 12,700 signatures have been collected of the 16,521 needed.

In addition, it has been reported that Victor Font, a candidate for the coming elections to be club president, has collected around 800 more. That would put the count at about 13,500, or 80% of the way there.

Jordi Farré, another former presidential candidate, has also collected signatures, and those should be added to the official tally soon. Altogether that would put the motion very close to succeeding, but the deadline is this Thursday. Time may run out.

Més que una Moció is pushing for the club’s members to sign the petition as soon as possible in order to formally censure Bartomeu. That would allow a vote to take place, in which at least 66% of members will need to vote in favor of removing Bartomeu to have him be forced to leave.

Such an effort has never succeeded, but these are unprecedented times. The team’s best player ever, Lionel Messi, openly criticized Bartomeu for lacking a sporting project and a clear plan. Messi had even tried to leave the club, only to back out in order to avoid a legal battle.
