New Barca board will have just 7 days to sign new players

Elections are scheduled for January 24

As Barcelona lurch from one crisis to another, the news that any new board will only less than a week to sign up new players and/or rid themselves of some deadwood surely won’t have been received well.

The likes of Victor Font, Joan Laporta and others will therefore have their work cut out before they’ve even taken office.

Indeed, arguably the work to secure some new faces begins now.

Agreements with potential targets, whomever they may be, need to be in place well before January 24th, 2021, with any unveilings planned for the last week of January.

It’s a tall order not least because no one really knows the full state of the books that Josep Maria Bartomeu and his band of merry men have left behind.

Not to mention the deals that Ronald Koeman will want done before the elections take place.

Memphis Depay appears to be his golden boy, and if the rumours are true then Martin Braithwaite will be a makeweight in any deal to bring the Lyon front man to Camp Nou.

Quite why Koeman feels the need to do so is a bit of a head scratcher at the moment.

Other than the fact that Koeman has worked with him at international level, for all of his evident skills, there’s no real need to sign Depay.

The Dane is at least a natural centre-forward and offers something different. Depay would appear to be another that needs to be shoe-horned into the system, meaning certain players will need to be dropped or played out of position.

Of course, who’s to say that Koeman and his backroom staff wouldn’t be dispensed with immediately post-elections, bringing about the farcical possibility of players that had been signed days before the handover of power, surplus to requirements.

Clearly the mess that the previous incumbents will have left is going to take years to turn around. To that end, whoever wins needs to be cut come slack.

As long as the candidate is, in the main, doing their upmost to satisfy the demands of the majority of culers, that should be enough - for now.

There are bound to be more twists and turns to come, well before the canvassing for votes starts in earnest.
