Barca issue statement after voting against €2.2bn CVC deal

Barcelona issued a statement on Thusday after voting against La Liga’s €2.2 billion deal with investment fund CVC Capital Partners.
The Catalans, Real Madrid, Athletic Bilbao and an “unnamed LaLiga 2 club” voted against the deal, while 38 teams voted in favor of the agreement.
The deal means 10% of the league’s business will be sold to CVC. La Liga reckons that 90% of the money received will go to clubs, women’s football as well as semi-professional and non-professional football, according to ESPN.
Barca and president Joan Laporta had already made their stance clear on the deal but have now released an update.
Here’s the Barcelona statement:
“FC Barcelona has participated today in the Assembly of the Spanish Professional Football League (LFP) at which its agreement with CVC Central Partners, the investment fund that is to become an industry partner of La Liga, was presented and submitted to a vote.
“FC Barcelona, represented by its Director of Football, Mateu Alemany, has positioned itself against the agreement which, and at the last minute, has included a clause that stipulates that the television rights of the clubs that have voted against the motion shall remain intact and that these shall be under no obligation to receive the financial injection that shall affect the next fifty years of life of the body.
“Note that Barça, as well as Real Madrid and Athletic Club, the three first division clubs that have not signed the agreement, defend their membership and assembly-based ownership systems, with boards of directors chosen by their members for limited mandates, reasons that support the inconvenience of accepting mortgages on their assets (such as in this case the transfer of their television rights) for the next half century, moreover considering the ongoing transformation and evolution of the football world.”
La Liga president Javier Tebas, unsurprisingly, took aim at Barca and Real Madrid for their opposition to the CVC deal at a press conference on Thursday.
“It’s clear that the position of Real Madrid and Barcelona is related to the Super League. This influx of money doesn’t favour the idea of a Super League that Florentino wants. It’s a cultural problem, he thinks the big clubs are the ones that should control everything. I’d like [Real Madrid and Barcelona] to be part of the agreement, they aren’t, but we’re not going to cry about it.”
Tebas also addressed Lionel Messi’s departure in his presser. He added, “Barcelona haven’t lost Messi due to this. I put it down to other reasons. The club has a lot of debt and made huge losses last season.”
