The Barcelona forward ‘expects more’ from himself

Memphis Depay wasn’t too happy with his performance despite bagging a hat-trick and picking up an assist for the Netherlands in Tuesday’s 6-1 demolition of Turkey.

It was a first international hat-trick for Memphis who now has 33 goals for his country, level with Johan Cruyff and Abe Lenstra, but he said after the match he expects more from himself.

“We were careless, especially me. I lost my first three balls, I am not satisfied with that and I need to improve. I am happy, especially with the result, but I expect more from myself.”

“We started well and they made it easy for us. So you can afford to be sloppy. The level has to be better, but I’m mostly talking about myself.”

Memphis set up Davy Klaassen for the opening goal after just 54 seconds, and the midfielder returned the favor with a great flick for the Barca star’s opener to make it 2-0.

The 27-year-old was full of praise for Klaassen after the match as well as a few of his other teammates.

“Today he was great, he was perhaps the best man on the pitch,” he said. “I also loved Stefan de Vrij and Virgil van Dijk. Klaassen knows when he is in the area, I really enjoyed the first goal.”

Tuesday’s win means the Netherlands are joint top of the group with Norway on 13 points but have a vastly superior goal difference, having scored 16 goals in six games.
