‘You can’t go in at half-time 3-0 ahead and end up drawing’

Xavi took his first training session as Barcelona manager on Tuesday and spent time talking to the players before the workout at the Ciutat Esportiva.

The new boss was without a host of regulars because of injuries and international call-ups but still wanted to address squad and send a key message at the start of his tenure.

Marca reckon they know what he was talking about and have revealed some of the details of his chat with the squad.

“You have to believe in yourselves,” he reportedly said.

“What happened in Vigo [against Celta Vigo] can’t happen to you. You have to always be alert; you can’t go in at half-time 3-0 ahead and end up drawing.”

The report reckons Xavi also told his players “they should be proud of being” at Barcelona and made it clear “this team always has to compete.”

Xavi certainly seems to be saying all the right things after arriving as Ronald Koeman’s replacement at the Camp Nou, but he does have some tricky fixtures to negotiate after the international break.

A derby with Espanyol is up first, followed by a key game against Benfica. Barca then play Villarreal and Real Betis before heading to Germany for a final Champions League group game at Bayern Munich.
