‘We are totally with him’

Barcelona president Joan Laporta has said he has “complete confidence” in Xavi and is expecting a good result against Porto on Tuesday in the Champions League.

Xavi is facing a bit of scrutiny after a series of poor performances and results from his team both at home and in Europe.

Yet Laporta has given his coach his full backing and thinks he can turn things around, particularly now Pedri and Frenkie de Jong are available again.

“We close ranks with the coach and his coaching staff. For us it is a pride to have a coach like Xavi, we have always said it,” he told TV3.

“We are totally with him. We have complete confidence in him and now he has all the players available. Frenkie and Pedri are available and we have many more solutions than we had.

“In this time with the injuries he has managed to move forward, which was not easy. We trust that he will go well against Porto. We see him very motivated.”

Laporta also spoke about Barca’s draw with Rayo at the weekend and felt the Catalans should have had two penalties in the game.

“As for Raphinha, I think we all agree that it was a penalty,” he added.

“And Lewandowski’s too. They were two very clear penalties.”

Victory for Barcelona on Tuesday would secure a place in the last 16 of the Champions League and provide the team with a big confidence boost ahead of their next La Liga fixture against Atletico Madrid.
