“I always wanted to stay here” - Nico Williams addresses Barça rumors
The winger rejected the Catalans this summer
The Nico Williams saga dominated the news surrounding Barcelona for the entire summer transfer window, with the player at one point almost certain to join the Blaugrana before reportedly changing his mind at least minute and rejecting a move to Catalonia.
Williams was also heavily linked with moves to the Premier League, but ended up staying at Athletic Club and will play at least another season in the Basque Country alongside his brother Iñaki.
Nico spoke to the press after Athletic’s 1-0 defeat to Atlético Madrid on Saturday about all the speculation surrounding his future, and the winger made it clear he never wanted to leave Bilbao.
“It’s always good when other teams have your name on their agenda, but I always had it clear that I wanted to be here and stay here, with a dream of doing great things for this club.
“I know there were approaches from many clubs, the Euros were a showcase for me. But my heart belongs to Athletic and I wanted to stay here. But you never know what will happen in the future”.

Williams’ future will no doubt come into question again next summer, but for now he is definitely staying at Athletic with the window officially closed. Will Nico’s stance remain the same if Barça fix their finances and return to the 1:1 spending rule that allows them to register players without any issues? Time will tell.
