The Dutchman will play a few minutes in the second half

Barcelona are set to receive a major boost ahead of Tuesday’s Champions League clash against Young Boys as Frenkie de Jong is ready to make his long-awaited return to the squad after missing over five months with an ankle injury.

De Jong has been training hard for the last two weeks to get himself in shape to return, and Hansi Flick confirmed in a press conference on Monday that the Dutchman will be called up for the game against the Swiss champions and could even see some action in the second half.

“It’s very good news to have him back in the team, even if it’s only for 5 or 10 minutes at the start. We had injuries and after October we’ll have three players back. It will be very good for the team, for the youngsters. To help them. We’ve already talked about it. I don’t know how much he’ll play, maybe 20 or 10 minutes.”

Flick makes it clear that Frenkie won’t start right away and will be given time to get back to full fitness, but having him available as a substitute is already great news for a Barça team very stretched in midfield and having to give the likes of Eric García big minutes out of position.

It’ll be fascinating to see De Jong’s development as a midfielder in Flick’s system, but he needs to be in shape first. The next few weeks will be about getting him to full fitness, but the most important thing is that Frenkie is finally back.
