The Dutch midfielder could be back very soon

Barcelona are very close to getting back one of their most important players as Hansi Flick confirmed Frenkie de Jong is getting ready to return after missing more than five months with an ankle injury.

The Dutch midfielder went through a very difficult recovery after hurting his ankle in last April’s El Clásico, which was his third injury to the same spot in a span of eight months. He finally returned to training a couple of weeks ago, and his return match will come sooner rather than later.

Flick confirmed De Jong’s status in a press conference on Friday, and hinted that Frenkie could come back as soon as Tuesday’s Champions League clash against Young Boys.

“I’ve liked what I’ve seen in training. Gavi is also recovering well, he’s in a good moment. In Frenkie’s case, he’s close to being ready to help us. It’s good to watch him. I believe [Saturday] will be an off-day for him. He’s trained really hard and he needs time to recover. He can help me even if he plays 20 minutes, but we have to see how he evolves. We’ll see next week.”

De Jong has been a very polarizing figure amongst Barça fans due mostly to his salary, but even his biggest critics are interested to see if Flick can get the best out of one of Barça’s most talented players and finally help Frenkie show his true worth to the team.

Barça’s midfield badly needs some depth at the moment, and De Jong’s comeback can’t come soon enough. And it sounds as though we are just a few days away from that.
