Barcelona to protest Gerard Piqué red card looking to avoid bigger suspension

The dumb actions of Barcelona center-back Gerard Piqué might result in a very big punishment, but the club will fight for the player.

On Tuesday the Blaugrana club released a quick statement in which protests the red card given by referee Velasco Carballo during the Spanish Supercup second leg against Athletic Bilbao, last Monday.

FC Barcelona have presented arguments against the red card shown to Gerard Piqué in the 58th minute of the game against Athletic Club in the second leg of the Spanish Super Cup.

The argument put forward is that the player did not address the referee's assistant in the terms included by referee Velasco Carballo in his subsequent report.

The star defender was sent off in the beginning of the second half because of a missed offside call by the assistant referee. In the heat of the game, Piqué allegedly told the linesman "I sh*t on your whore mother", according to Carballo's report after the match

Piqué is automatically out of Barça's La Liga debut, next Sunday at San Mamés against Bilbao. However, the Spanish Federation is doing further investigation, which could result in a four- to twelve-game suspension because of insulting conduct towards a match official.

The league's decision should be announced within the next few days.
