Uruguay boss Oscar Tabarez has been talking about Luis Suarez’s international future, with the Barcelona striker absent from his latest squad for friendlies against Peru.

Tabarez spoke at length about the 32-year-old who will remain at Barcelona over the international break to undergo “medical treatment” as part of a “personalized work plan.”

“So, how long has Suarez been on the national team? He’s here from 2007. How many games he played? How many goals he scored? How many times did he play injured? How many times he had surprising recoveries?

”For how quick they were or how they scaped normal things like the necessary recovery time and he overcame that, so I think it’s rushed and it’s not knowing the player [Suarez] saying he’s over. Not at all. Time will tell who’s right. We have a lot of confidence on him being fit.

The Uruguay boss went on to laud Suarez for his club career, discussing his achievements at Ajax, Liverpool and Barcelona and his ability to “keep his head up” despite injury setbacks in the past.

Tabarez also looked to the future and talked about what he hoped the national team can still expect from their all-time leading goalscorer going forwards.

”What Luis Suarez has given to Uruguayan football is huge. Never mind the chance that he can give something little from now on. I hope he can still give us something. I’m not 100 per cent sure, he can have some problem. But we can’t worry just for one injury or missing one game.”

Suarez has already missed game time this season due to a calf injury picked up on the opening day and has attracted criticism for his performances. However, he has still managed a fine goalscoring record, racking up six goals in his eight Barca appearances.
