The Brazilian, who is on a season-long loan from Barcelona, went under the knife “during which loose joint fragments were removed,” according to Bayern.
The operation has been declared successful but still means Coutinho will be out of action for a while.
Although the season remains on hold in Germany teams have resumed training this month with a view to completing the season by the end of June.
Bundesliga CEO Christian Seifert has said the league is ready to resume by May 9 but approval from the government is still required.
Coutinho’s future remains the subject of heavy speculation. He is expected to leave Barcelona but is being tipped to head out on loan again, possibly to the Premier League.
