Some great strikes from less celebrated stars

The lack of football at the moment means many of us (me included) have had to look back through the archives to find some classic matches to get our regular fix.

A journey through the past also offers the opportunity to watch a lot of goals, some from rather unexpected sources.

Here’s a look at some of the best goals from Barcelona players who either flopped badly at the Camp Nou, spent only a brief time at the club or failed to meet lofty expectations.

Ricardo Quaresma vs. Albacete 2004

If you are thinking Ricardo Quaresma has been around for forever then you are right. He absolutely has. The Portugal star has played for a host of clubs around Europe and even enjoyed a brief, entirely forgettable stay, at the Camp Nou.

Quaresma spent only one season at Barcelona, making 22 appearances and scoring just a solitary goal. It was a pretty decent effort in a 5-0 win over Albacete though. He left a few months later in a bit of a huff after falling out with boss Frank Rijkaard.

Ibrahim Afellay vs. Malaga 2011

Ibrahim Afellay is another player who struggled to make an impact at Barca. The Dutch midfielder offered a few glimpses of his talent but struggled horribly with injuries and simply couldn’t force his way into the team.

He’s probably best remembered for his assist for Lionel Messi in the semi-finals of the Champions League but did also score this neat little effort again Malaga in 2011.

Jari Litmanen vs. Real Sociedad 2000

Finland international Jari Limanen was a rare talent and enjoyed a wonderful career at Ajax but managed just two disappointing seasons at Barcelona before joining Liverpool on a free transfer in 2001.

Injuries played their part in Litmanen’s tough time at the Camp Nou, while he was also publicly called out by Louis van Gaal for a perceived failure to adapt.

There were moments of magic from Litmanen though, not least this thumping strike into the top corner against Real Sociedad.

Arda Turan vs. Sevilla 2016

Arda Turan hasn’t quite been forgotten at Barcelona yet because curiously enough he’s still contracted to the club until the end of the season. However, his performances were largely forgettable, and he’s one of the club’s biggest flops.

He did score a hat-trick for Barcelona against Borussia Monchengladbach, and he was also on target twice in the Spanish Super Cup win over Sevilla in 2016.

And it’s his second goal that really caught the eye. The midfielder latched on to a loose ball from outside the penalty area and produced a brilliant chip to send it over the goalkeeper.

Giovani dos Santos vs. Murcia 2008

Giovani dos Santos joined Barcelona as a 13-year-old but was sold to Tottenham six years later after managing just 38 appearances for the first team.

The Mexican scored four goals for Barcelona, three of them coming in a 5-3 win over Murcia, and this one was the pick of the bunch.

Aleix Vidal vs. Athletic Bilbao 2017

Barcelona bought Aleix Vidal from Sevilla in 2015, although he had previously played for the club at youth level, and sent him back to the Andalusian side three years later.

Vidal never managed to cement himself a regular place in the team and a really horrible ankle injury picked up against Alaves saw him sidelined for a long time.

He did make it back out on the pitch and scored this fine individual effort in a 3-0 win over Athletic Bilbao that brought plenty of smiles, especially from Lionel Messi on the bench.
