The Catalans look set to miss out on the title again

Barcelona center-back Gerard Pique has been talking about the title race and La Liga in general in a conference call on Friday.

Pique took part in the call along with Javier Tebas and ESPN’s Fernando Palomo with the broadcaster having just acquired US broadcasting rights to La Liga.

This season has seen a tight and tense title battle and Pique feels the quality in La Liga gets better with every season that passes.

“Now LaLiga is difficult for us. It’s very difficult to win it this year,” he said.

“I think that every year the level of LaLiga is increasing in terms of the quality of the games, the quality of the players. There are different clubs that are growing so much in the last few years — to put an example, Levante, which is a club which a few years ago they were in lower divisions.

“We went to play against them on Tuesday, and we didn’t win because they have a strong team and maybe they are not as popular as the other clubs, like ours or Real Madrid or Atletico Madrid, but they’re doing things very well.

Barca did have the title in their hands just a few weeks ago but defeats to Granada and Real Madrid coupled with draws against Atletico Madrid and Levante have left their title hopes hanging by a threat.

Pique admitted Barca’s title hopes are pretty much over for this season but is hoping the team can bounce back.

“I hope it’s not as tight as this year and we can win it in the future. But it’s true that this year between Atlético Madrid, Real Madrid and us we had a great fight until the end. Let’s see who wins at the end of competition,” he said.

“But there are other clubs that, as I said, they’re doing great things. Just to put an example of Sevilla, it’s a club that’s fighting until the last day also to try to win it. It’s very difficult for them because they are a little bit far.

“But they played very good football and they are there because they deserve it. So, I think that every year there are more clubs fighting to be in the positions in the top and it’s very difficult. Every year, it’s more difficult to win this competition.”

Pique was talking ahead of another pivotal weekend in La Liga. Leaders Atletico head into Sunday’s match against Osasuna with a two-point lead over Real Madrid. Los Blancos are away at Athletic, while Barcelona host Celta Vigo at the Camp Nou.
