A good reason

Jordi Cruyff has been chatting about Lamine Yamal and says that former Barcelona boss Xavi knew after “five minutes” of watching the youngster in training that he was special.

Yamal has gone on to become a key player for club and country and is living up to the enormous hype that has surrounding him throughout his career.

Cruyff has detailed just how impressed everyone at the club was when he joined the first team for training.

“I remember because the first times he went to train, after five minutes the coach, Xavi at the time, looked at me and said ‘This kid is special.’” he told Movistar Plus.

“He’s extraordinary, everyone sees it, but we’re going to give him peace of mind, not pressure. He’s 17, let him enjoy it.”

Yamal when on to make his debut in April 2023, but Xavi had wanted him to play before then. Cruyff explained why the club did not let that happen.

“Xavi wanted to give him a debut before, but the truth is that he didn’t have a contract,” he added.

“We said that first we had to make sure that the player would be ours for many years and then let him play.”

Barca’s wonderkid was on target yet again on Thursday against Monaco. That’s now five goals and three assists already this season.
