Koeman has Barca clause in his Netherlands contract

The boss can leave if the Catalan giants come calling

Netherlands boss Ronald Koeman has an exit clause in his contract that allows him to leave for Barcelona, according to KNVB director Nico-Jan Hoogma.

Hoogma was talking on Good Morning Eredivisie on Fox Sports and was asked about the possibility of Koeman leaving for Barcelona next summer.

The director said plans have been put in place in case Barcelona get in touch, explaining: “Agreements have been made about that. They have to pay for that.”

The clause apparently only relates to Barcelona, and Hoogman also said it remains Koeman’s ambition to return to the Camp Nou as boss.

“I hope that we can work together for a very long time, because I think it is going very well. But Ronald has long indicated that he wants to be a Barcelona trainer someday.

“Let’s see what will happen. Success at Oranje will certainly help him, just like everyone else helps us.

“But again: I hope the trajectory continues up to and including the World Cup in Qatar.”

Koeman took over as Netherlands boss in 2018 and has helped revive a team that failed to qualify for the last World Cup. The Dutch are just one win away from sealing a place at Euro 2020 and top Group C ahead of Germany.

His contract with the Dutch side expires in 2022, while Ernesto Valverde’s current deal runs until the end of 2019-20 with the option of another season.
