“We must fight to correct this as soon as possible.”

Lionel Messi spoke out about football and society in the cover story for the 100th edition of La Garganta Poderosa, an Argentine magazine.

A UNICEF goodwill ambassador for over 10 years, Messi has delved into social issues from time to time, particularly when it comes to issues affecting children. He didn’t shy away on this occasion, first saying that for him, “education was the base for everything.”

Messi has from time to time donated money to coronavirus relief efforts, and in this interview he maintained that “it is essential, for those who need it most, to preserve all fundamental services in situations like this pandemic; water, electricity and even food.”

For that reason, the Argentine star praised volunteers who were making sure people in their neighborhoods didn’t go without food.

“It gives me immense pride to see how they get involved, even in times as complicated as the ones we are living through. The cups that are raised this year should be for all the people who are involved to help in that way.”

He goes on to say: “Inequality is one of the great problems of our society, and we must fight to correct it as soon as possible.”

Speaking about football, the Barcelona star said that these days he is “less obsessed with goals” and instead focuses on how he can help the team perform better as a group.
